Welcome to November!

Let's start the month off right: I would like to draw your attention to my LungCancer-Awareness group. November is Lung Cancer awareness month. We strive to draw interest to a very important cancer that impacts a large number of individuals on a daily basis, and it is the number one cancer killer. Sadly, the numbers are growing everyday. And, many are not fortunate enough to catch it early enough pre-surgery. My momma was one of the unfortunate ones. The doctors discovered her cancer during the late stages. But – there is always hope for others. This month, as another anniversary approaches, I wish to encourage others to get tested when possible. Take valuable time to pay attention to the warning signs. Do not be afraid to ask questions – your family doctors and nurses are there to help you. We do care. We all fight important battles everyday to protect what truly matters. Your health is not to be taken for granted.

I have learned several hard lessons that life changes in the blink of an eye. You take a deep breath – feel one last heartbeat – and your loved one is gone. Our lives are all precious. Time does not wait for you to hesitate. Do not be afraid to make the leap – it does make the difference. And, it could save a person's life: including yours.

November is also the month we observe Thanksgiving. It is a time to rejoice special moments, reflecting the value of appreciating life's most beautiful blessings. As everyone spends time with family, do not forget how invaluable this time is. It is easy to forget that not everyone has this luxury. Try not to forget the importance of this life blessing, and thank a loved one for being there for you. I cannot say for certain where I would be today, if not for the exhausting efforts of those who love[d] me – and have given their hearts to me unselfishly. If anything, I have (re)learned that this love we carry within ourselves never dies. Our hearts carry its powerful essence with us, always. I try and keep this beautiful feeling safely tucked away within the confines of my own heart. Though it may at times feel lost and utterly shattered – I know the strength of this selfless, bountiful love will continue to light the way, and I will hold onto my true happiness.

Lung Cancer Awareness
LilacsStage four lung cancer, they said. Six months, at best. You held on for so long, chemotherapy jovially turning you from a white haired lady in to a wig topped moppet. Vitamin C treatments, pills, sleep. Doctors, hospitals, tears and upset stomachs. To make you feel better, we announced that I was pregnant with your eleventh grandchild, and we hoped to God in Heaven that you would meet her. And you did. You clutched her to you with the fierce passion of somebody who has created a life inside of them and spooned her cake on her first birthday...and a month later you faded away.
When the call came, I was sitting on my living room floor. It was my birthday, quietly I turned another year older while you hummed along on machines in a hospital room, far from me. Far from anywhere I needed you to be, and the last place I wanted. It was just before midnight, everything was peaceful, I was content. Contemplative.
We had been in to see you earlier, I stopped by, chatted for just a while. You coul
