In two days, there will be another birthday. It is a special one, thought it is a day I can no longer share with one of the few people in this living world that have meant so very much to me. Momma’s birthday anniversary still stings deep. Sadly, I fear it always will – but in the past, I did latch onto the fragile hope I might at last be able to re-connect with someone else who was important to her. In my sincerity and dutiful actions, I prayed I was doing everything in my power to abide by my momma’s last request: to see to her husband’s well being. In the recent past three years I have tried – and I kept on fighting (a losing battle) – until the very end, when it all became a bittersweet failure.

And, despite how deeply hurt I felt (and still feel so today), that it was all so bitterly one sided; in my heart, I wanted to always believe that there would come a day when the phone might ring, or there might be a knock upon my door, and that at last, he might be finally willing to try. All I have ever wanted was for him to try to put aside his own pain – just for a single moment – and to open his eyes to someone else’s grief. Along the way, I began wondering if it were asking too much for someone else to be less selfish. And, as much as I desired to be selfish as her daughter – I was willing to try and put aside my own pain, and felt devastated that he couldn’t.

I learned the truth on the third anniversary of her death.

It came from a third party, because he was “too afraid” to tell me. After a long silence and much hesitation, my dearest friend Tarina informed me momma’s husband Ed could no longer bear to see me, because I: “looked too much like Sue.” Immediately, it felt like the piercing of a thousand knives. No one might ever know the truest agony of gazing into a mirror and facing your mother’s own reflection. I see her in the shapes of my hands, in combing curls that were hers, crying tears from pale hues of hazel that are so eerily familiar. The shadows loom in re-creating art she loved – in singing lyrics to the songs she treasured – carrying the essence of strength that was so important. Every single day, I bravely faced the mirror – and everyday – I faced the painful, looming shadows, but I accepted it. This was God’s most precious gift to me – from angel Momma Sue. I prayed to honor her sacred memory in knowing that I truly was her daughter, in all of these precious things.

And so, it is with a new courage, I must face the realization that I might not see Ed again. Though, I always pray for his comfort and happiness. I felt I have done the best that I could for my momma, fighting on until left with no other alternatives but to sever our connections. The last thing I would ever want is to tear someone else’s heart apart by feeling that my presence is a hindrance and not a comfort. Though I feel his motives are selfish ones, considering this is something beyond my control – I will ultimately come to terms with it, take the higher path, and carry on with doing what I have always done: sharing the tenderness and strength of heart that is my momma’s legacy.

LilacsStage four lung cancer, they said. Six months, at best. You held on for so long, chemotherapy jovially turning you from a white haired lady in to a wig topped moppet. Vitamin C treatments, pills, sleep. Doctors, hospitals, tears and upset stomachs. To make you feel better, we announced that I was pregnant with your eleventh grandchild, and we hoped to God in Heaven that you would meet her. And you did. You clutched her to you with the fierce passion of somebody who has created a life inside of them and spooned her cake on her first birthday...and a month later you faded away.
When the call came, I was sitting on my living room floor. It was my birthday, quietly I turned another year older while you hummed along on machines in a hospital room, far from me. Far from anywhere I needed you to be, and the last place I wanted. It was just before midnight, everything was peaceful, I was content. Contemplative.
We had been in to see you earlier, I stopped by, chatted for just a while. You coul
