In Loving Memory: A Celebration of the Life of William Ashley Brown

It has been exactly one year since our beloved GeneratingHype passed away, after enduring a long fight with AIDS and brain cancer. And since that time, several deviants were outstanding in rallying together to show his family our support. Indeed, Bill has inspired so many of us here in only a few short years. There is no question as to how much he has given to everyone during his lifetime – and far beyond. He fought for various causes, and always stood strong as a role model for every one of us within the Literature community: before and long after his time as a Gallery Moderator. Bill was always generous with his vast wealth of knowledge and oftentimes went out of his way to offer assistance and to share his wisdom with us.

Treasuring Our Memories

Bill’s selflessness will always be remembered. Indeed, all of us have been impacted by his efforts in some way – even from a distance, so now is the proper time to honor his memory by taking a moment to celebrate who he was and what he has meant to so many of us.

InspirationInspiration is
Everything
Inspiration is life
Mortality (and immortality)
Inspiration is three stripes in the middle of a road
A baby's first breath
And an old song on the radio
Inspiration is a quiet sunset
And a crazy dream
Inspiration is a cup of green tea
Inspiration is friendship
And heartbreak
And especially a mix
Inspiration is even hate
Though more often it is love
Inspiration is a thought
An emotion
A random perspective
Inspiration is meeting someone new
Inspiration is saying goodbye
Inspiration is kindness
(Although inspiration is not often kind)
Inspiration
Is a world
Seen by all and visited by few
Everything is inspiration
Captain Of His SoulDear DeviantArt Community,
Have you met my friend `GeneratingHype?
Bill is first and foremost a writer. He pens his thoughts, painting with words, stringing clauses together with the same easy grace as an artisan stringing beads onto a handcrafted necklace. Commas do not deter him, nor do semicolons; punctuation is his butler.
His life is not quite an open book: more of a scrapbook which we've been invited to peruse. A snapshot here, a folded clipping there: mementos from a man who is not ashamed of who he is or where he's been.
He has AIDS. He is gay. These two sentences — those baldfaced truths — are not as interwoven as today's society would have us believe. His HIV status is neither the result of being too careless nor too carefree, but of the cravenness of another.
Judge not.
Rather than bemoan the fell clutch of circumstance, rejoice at his unconquerable soul. Bill could have kept his private life private, presenting himself to us as aught but a teacher, w

The former was by my own doing – the latter was not. The numbers passed like small schoolchildren struggling to count; they skipped numbers and occasionally stopped to partake in a more invigorating activity such as hopscotch. There is supposedly strength in numbers, but I find them to be only one thing: tedious.

 Quotes From the Heart

“Thank you, Bill, for teaching me how to live. For showing me how much of this world I am not seeing.

You were a Light to everyone around you. Someday, I hope I can be half as bright.

“Bill - I love you even though we've never met; your life and strength and creativity have been inspirations for me since our first interactions, years ago now though it seems like yesterday. You played a bigger part than you could possibly know in my coming to terms with myself, if only through your existence as an icon of adjustment in a world of adversity; one with whom I got the chance to interact and form a friendship with, and one who I could never forget.

You’ve touched so many lives, Bill, and you've left a true legacy, both in this community and in the heart of those who've come to know you. You will not be forgotten –  many of us will see to that, I’m sure.”

tiganesc

“I have had Bill on my watchlist for a while. Ever since I have joined the literature community on this site I think. And although I have never interacted with him, I have read his journals, I have read his work and found them to be an inspiration in my own life. If I were ever upset, I found, reading his journals, his work would make me feel better.

I feel like I have lost a source of inspiration, a best friend. And one who can never ever be replaced.

Bill, I wish I could have told you what your work has meant to me over the last two years. Thank you so much, for everything.

You are and will always be, my hero.

Heaven is a lucky place, indeed. They gained a bright, beautiful piece of moonshine.”

UntamedUnwanted

“With time, wounds heal, even those left by someone passing, but they never disappear, they leave a scar. Many scars are jagged and ugly, you want to hide them or tuck them away. The scar the Bill left will surely be the most beautiful of them all.”

“When Bill first told us that the end was coming, and soon, I fell apart.
I was angry, terrified, sad...selfish. I wanted him to fight.
But he had been fighting all his life.

Eventually, I accepted it and then I was happy for him.
He found love, gave himself over to it, and lived.
Lived more than some people live in 80 years.

Part of me can't believe that I'll never talk to him again.
I shared with him everything, he was there for me and it made
me happy to be there for him.
I loved working with him, talking with him, staying up until the early morning hours.”

StJoan

“He affected me in ways that I don't suppose he ever realized. Simply by taking an interest in my writing, he opened a door which allowed me to find my confidence again. I could only see his character and bravery through the fogged glass of the internet, but I assure you, those qualities in him burned brightly enough to shine through even that barrier.

I keenly wish that I had had the honor of knowing him “in real life,” but I'm honored by the fact that I was able to know him at all.

RetroZombie

“As with any good story, we're left wanting more, not less. Focused, passionate and immensely talented, I only wish I was able to know him better, and that those who never had the chance to could have.

Our world was better for his presence in it, and the things I'll take away from the day are to not allow mediocre to be good enough, and to live every single minute of every single day.

Godspeed Bill, and god bless those closest to you as they move from mourning your loss to celebrating the time you had together, shortened though it was.”

SRSmith

“I just got a poem accepted into a literary journal - I didn't expect to think of you when it happened, but I did, Mr. Editor. I suspect it's because you were one of the things that made me want to start actually editing my poetry and making it better, rather than writing it and then lazily letting it sit about and be petted instead of ripping it apart and giving it the chance to become something great. Anyway, I'm sure the influence was unconscious on your part, but thanks.

I wish I could tell you about this small victory; I'll bet it would give you joy. But then, where you are, you probably know about it anyway. :*)

“Hello, dear sir. I never knew you and just read a deviation dedicated to you. It made me want to know more so I read some of your works and fell in love with them. Your works are inspiring and gave me...hope. I don't know what more to say (or write) but I really love your inspiring works; they touched my heart.”

TyaTikana

“It's amazing that people are still reading your work and commenting on your page. You meant so many things to so many people; you continue to do so.

I hope you're doing well, wherever you are -- and I hope that wherever you are is as beautiful as you were.”

SadisticIceCream

“I miss you.

How odd - those words seem so empty, but they couldn't be full of anything else. Since I've known, it's been so hard. You were such a massive pillar in my infrastructure of support, even on the net. I apologise for not having written for fear of grief.

I'll not forget you.

Love always, 'little sis'' :]

x-x-sakura-x-x

“Hey Bill,

Just to say I'm sorry I never got to visit you back in London before you fell ill, and I'm also sorry that I can never manage to say anything when I come to your page, or think of anything to say that isn't shamefully lame and cliché. I'm also sorry that I wasn't more selfish when I first encountered you, and that I didn't keep you all to myself, instead of touching so many other lives. Most of all, I'm sorry you aren't here to laugh at my frightful ramblings.

I probably won't be seeing again you one day, because I'm an atheist, but I hope you get this letter. You are sadly missed; I think of you every day.

Love, Martin.”

Though still deeply heartbroken by his loss, I know that he will no longer have to suffer, and is in a better place now. I cannot even begin to express how much this man has inspired me. In many ways personally and otherwise, I have him to thank for allowing me a rare opportunity to be where I am today, for he was one of the few that saw something in me that I did not see at the time, and I was given a special chance to shine. But, as you all well know, it was his warm heart, generosity of spirit, and modesty that always shined the brightest, in all of us. He will be missed terribly, and the DeviantART Literature community will not be the same without him. Thank you my dearest Bill for giving me the chance to shine, to do my best to make a difference and to always feel inspired by your presence.

Lest We Never Forget

It is not too late to get to know GeneratingHype and to explore his legacy here on DeviantART. His home on the web still has much to offer us: from deviations, journals, and a wide variety of helpful news articles. And if you feel further inspired, do not forget to take a moment to donate to one of his most beloved causes: The Philadelphia AIDS Fund. And remember, every moment we live counts – so make the most of each day and help to keep Bill’s memory strong by continuing to spread the positivity.

Blessings,
LadyLincoln

to be quite honest, this is the first time i've ever heard of bill.
but oh, from what i've read here, i am safe in the knowledge that he was a wonderful human being, someone who touched others very deeply - and i am sorry i never had the chance to meet him.
it always leaves a hollow ache in my stomach when i think of how horrible it is to lose someone. so i'm sending my *rather late* condolences to you, and to all he brightened with his words.
it's very inspiring, in a way. even now, he is continuing to spread love. i hope that, when i move on, i will have left even a fifth of an impact as he has.<3

Jenene, I remember the year before Bill passed on, how he had slipped into a coma and was out of reach for far longer than I want to remember. I admit that I felt it was hopeless, because I had lost several relatives from never coming out of a coma. And then, one early morning I saw word posted that he was awake! It was during the Winter 2009 HaikuWriMo that February. The moment I knew, I wrote that day's haiku - the most meaningful and beautiful in the entire collection:

16th:
waking from a long sleep
a dusting of snow

Trying to see the glass as half full, Bill was back among us for eleven more months.

And when the final day arrived, I wrote a haibun in his "memory":

It's been this way for several days - the leaves all around me have been falling like I've never seen them do, yet there's no lack of leaves still left on the branches. Everywhere I look. The memory.

a steady downpour...
every tree stands, weeping
as I do now

I recall that too. I was so frightened, but I knew he was a fighter, so I that always kept my hopes for him strong. That was one of the most wonderful things about Bill: he was a positive fighter, all the way until the very end.

I remember being in chat with `IBinsanity/^Tiganusi and crying and crying. I remember walking up the stairs to my aunt's house and breaking down and wailing "WHY AM I THIS SAD I'VE NEVER EVEN MET HIM"

And that's when I realised the power of deviantART - it brings people together with a shared passion for art or literature or just the community. And that bonds us. Bill inspired me so much but he was also so fantastically caustic when you fancied having a gossip in chat :D It's not just the awe inspiring ability to live that he had, it was those little funny moments that will stay with me.
